Huge Range Of Generators Available

In the world of backup power generation, reliability is paramount. Your generator is a lifeline during power outages, ensuring that critical systems keep running smoothly. To maintain this reliability, regular servicing is essential. At Bellwood Rewinds, we understand the importance of a well-maintained generator, and in this comprehensive guide, we’ll delve into the intricacies of the generator servicing process. We’ll explore the different service levels we offer and provide a detailed breakdown of the meticulous steps involved in keeping your generator operating at its best.

Service Levels

Servicing a generator isn’t a one-size-fits-all endeavour. The frequency of servicing and the extent of maintenance required depend on various factors, including the generator’s usage and type. Most of the generators we service typically fall into two categories: those that require a 12-monthly service and those that need servicing after accumulating 500 hours of operation—whichever comes first. Additionally, we provide two distinct service levels, known as A and B services, each designed to address the unique needs of different generators.

A Service

For standby generators that only come to life during power outages, we recommend an A service after six months of inactivity. This intermediate service level ensures that your generator is always ready to kick into action when it’s needed most. Let’s take a closer look at what an A service entails:

Site Visit and Safety Measures:

Our highly trained technicians start by making a site visit. Upon arrival, they establish contact with the site representative to ensure clear and effective communication. Safety is our top priority, so where necessary, work permits are completed before any servicing work begins. We take every precaution to disable monitors, alarms, or smoke detectors that could be inadvertently triggered by the generator’s operation.

Preparation and Inspection:

The technicians unload their tools, parts, and equipment from our service vehicle. Before diving into the work, they carefully assess the access route to ensure safety for themselves and the equipment. Familiarising themselves with the generator panel and its operation is the next step. To prevent any unintentional starts, the generator is isolated from the changeover system.

Maintenance Checks:

Our team thoroughly checks essential elements of the generator, including oil and coolant levels. They also assess the concentration of antifreeze in the coolant and top it up if necessary. Battery charger volts and battery volts are inspected and topped up as required. A visual inspection of the control panel is conducted to identify any signs of wear, damage, or loose parts. The alternator coupling bolts and cable lugs are carefully inspected for any issues. Additionally, belts, hoses, radiator cores, and guards are visually inspected, and the air filter element is replaced when needed. We also ensure that the bund is free from any fluids that may have leaked.

Engine Start and Visual Inspection:

The key switch is turned to Manual Start, and if ear protection is not already in use, it is worn to protect against noise. The generator is started and run for a 15-minute duration. During this time, a visual inspection is carried out, ensuring the generator’s vital parameters meet the required standards. This includes checking volts, engine speed, alternator frequency, oil pressure, coolant temperature, battery charge alternator volts, and more, as defined by the service checklist.

Safety Checks and Shutdown:

Safety remains a top concern throughout the service. The operation of the earth leakage device (if fitted) is meticulously verified. The generator is then safely stopped and isolated by switching the key switch to the “Off” position. Before moving forward, a final visual inspection of the genset is performed to ensure everything is in order.

Oil and Fuel Filter Replacement:

Effective maintenance also involves changing critical components. Old oil is drained into a drum for recycling, and the old oil filter is replaced with a new one. To prime the oil filter, the engine is turned over, and the oil level is checked and topped up as necessary. Old fuel filter(s) are also replaced with new ones, and the fuel system is primed and bled to ensure optimal performance. After these replacements, the engine is started and run for an additional 15 minutes to confirm everything is functioning as it should.

Post-Service Checks and Cleanup:

After the engine has been running, a final visual inspection is carried out while the set is operational to confirm correct operation. Once this is completed, the generator is stopped, and any residual fluids are properly disposed of through our recycling system. The work area is cleaned, ensuring that the site is left in excellent condition.

Documentation and Reporting:

Our technicians are meticulous in documenting the service process. They fill out service and report sheets to maintain detailed records of the work performed. Following this, our technician reports back to the site contact, providing a site copy of the signed sheets and reporting any faults or issues encountered during the service. To conclude this phase, the call sheet is signed by the site representative.

Site Completion and Waste Disposal:

Before leaving the site, we ensure that all work is completed to the satisfaction of the site contact. The work permit is signed off (and the plant handover form is returned if applicable). Our team then departs, leaving behind a generator that’s primed for peak performance. Any waste materials generated during the service are carefully disposed of through Bellwood Rewinds’ recycling system, adhering to our commitment to environmental responsibility.
